Summary: This is a small soft cover booklet of 25 pages. There are 23 crocheted edging patterns, 9 knitted edging patterns, and 10 tatted edging patterns. The tatting patterns are at the back of the book. There are written in vintage style instructions with a black and white photo of a sample edging accompanying each written pattern. Also included is a full color photo of all the tatted edgings on the inside of the back cover. 8 of the tatted edging patterns require only a "shuttle and ball" and 2 of them require 1 "shuttle only". These patterns would be good for a beginner who wants to orient themselves to the vintage style instructions. The ability to read vintage style patterns is a good skill to have because there are so many gorgeous patterns from vintage times that it opens up the possibilities the more types of instructions styles you learn to be comfortable reading! I could not find this book anywhere online at the time of this post (Jan. 3, 2010). I purchased it at a Walmart Store in 2004 in Southern California in the needlework section (they even have tatting shuttles, I'm happy to report).

Summary: This classic learn how booklet has changed from a large 50 page, black and white photo booklet published by "The Spool Cotton Company" to it's present form of color photos in a 65 page small booklet by "Coats & Clark". The subjects remain unchanged. It still presents step-by-step information on how to knit, crochet, tat, and do embroidery.
The more things change, the more they stay the same! ;)
Oh...and...yes, I do have one of each copy pictured above. Silly me!
While the current booklet may not be the very best tatting instruction around there was a time when it was just about the only instruction booklet for tatting around. It is a classic!

Summary: This is a 15 page booklet. The first 10 pages are professional hand drawn images accompanied by explanations on how to tat on a step-by-step basis. Feedback I have gotten from tatting students is that these instructions wouldn't have made sense if there wasn't a live tatting teacher there to explain them. Most importantly most tatting students I spoke to felt that the book didn't explain the all-important "switch" or "flip" of the threads in the basic double stitch. There is a few pages on "whipstitching" and "laundering" to finish the tatting. There is also one very simple tatted edging pattern written in vintage style instructions. This booklet is no longer in print.
